Reading at the Crossroads

Reading at the Crossroads is an archive for columns and letters which appeared in the Terre Haute Tribune Star. I also blog here when my patience is exhausted by what I feel is irritating, irrational and/or ironic in life. --gary daily

At the Club With Donald and His Few Close Friends

Get in line to join Trump’s golf club

Did you get your invitation to become a member of the U.S. President’s Florida White House/private golf club, Mar-a-Lago?

Since his election this Trump-owned profit center and winter White House has doubled the fee that gives you entrance. It was $100K. Now, given the fact that membership will allow you to dine, walk the grounds, and cheat on this club’s well-manicured golf course, all in the presence or shadow of our Commander in Chief, it costs you $200K to join.

I’m hoping Trump will give a shot at membership to some of those 77,000 voters in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania who put him in power. Why shouldn’t a few “Trump is authentic” voters get a chance to hob-nob with the rich and the powerful at the club? I’m certain those members — real estate developers, energy executives, investment bankers, you know, the good old gang of good old boys — would appreciate sitting down for a meal with, say, an unemployed coal miner with black lung disease and a daughter addicted to opioids and hear how that “Making America Great Again” thing is going.
