To the Editor:

It was only five years ago. Remember always, the Jan. 6 assault was on America’s democracy and elections.

Now we are in Venezuela. President Donald Trump has vowed to “run” this independent, sovereign nation. Our history-ignorant President and his enablers mentioned oil countless times in their January 3 press conference. Democracy and elections for the people of the nation we invaded? Nary a peep. It's the Gulf war and Iraq all over again.

And here we have another of the regular ploys we get from Trump and his robot Republican supporters. Last week Jack Smith, U.S. Special Counsel for the Department of Justice (DOJ), appointed in November 2022 to investigate Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the handling of classified documents, testified before the Republican led House Judiciary Committee. At length, using clear, factually-supported evidence, he reported Trump’s indictable criminal actions before, during and after the deadly January 6, 2021 attacks on the Capitol.

Remember always, the Jan. 6 assault was on America’s democracy and elections. Now, with these ugly truths hitting the fan, without consulting Congress, Trump goes to war with Venezuela on his command, his timing.

This massive military operation (We’ll never know the dollar cost.) is an act of war. The world knows this. Trump’s oil-stained fingers are all over it. His needy adolescent Big Kid on the Block rep exceeds policy reasoning and Congressional approval. The world knows this as well.

No one can say where this Republican Venezuela shot in the dark is going take us. But it can be said this Trump/Republican action gives every bully nation in the world permission to intervene in other nations’ sovereignty at will. China in Taiwan. Russia in Estonia and Lithuania. And don't even get started on the middle east and African possibilities.

Trump and his puppet Republicans are responsible for this dumb and dirty deed. All Republicans in office, top to bottom, should hear the outrage now, pay the price at the polls in November.

And remember always, the Jan. 6 assault was on America’s democracy and elections.
