Reading at the Crossroads

Reading at the Crossroads is an archive for columns and letters which appeared in the Terre Haute Tribune Star. I also blog here when my patience is exhausted by what I feel is irritating, irrational and/or ironic in life. --gary daily

“Votes, laws make those kinds of judgments”

There is little reason to try to reason with Lois Little (Trib-Star, March 26, 2025). It is her personal faith not reason she calls on in criticizing me for attempting to do God’s work. Of course, that’s her God she has in mind. And having God on her side, in the sights of her being, she finds it easy to see only blindness in others not so gifted.

Ms. Little does have the acuity to see the real Donald Trump. She correctly states he is (her words) an “arrogant, egotistical man.” Still, it seems her personal God made the voters put this deeply flawed, convicted criminal in the White House.

Coming down from the heavens, like Ms. Little, I am just a voter with a single, important vote. I work hard to use this limited power carefully, in my community, state and nation. I have to wonder what Ms. Little, Christian Nationalists, and Sunday only MAGA Bible readers think of John F. Kennedy’s take on God’s hand at work in our elections and government. As JFK put it: “… let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.”

And now we see Donald Trump’s grinding arrogance and vaulting egotism at work in the oval office. Should we be surprised or silent when we see wisdom replaced by loyalty, objective advice replaced by flattery, competence pushed aside for craven churlishness, and the public interest abandoned, replaced by private, moneyed interest?

The Founding Fathers did not establish an other worldly guide as to what our individual political views and actions should be. No elected official gets a free ride, a ride that only God can judge. Our votes and the laws under our Constitution make those kinds of judgments.

And we all suffer the results of the 2024 election.
